reflection on building windows

Like other independent schools, Four Winds relies on the generosity of parents and alumni families to help us cover any gaps in operating expenses. To supplement the operating budget beyond the 90% that is provided in tuition dollars, fundraising occurs mainly through 2 fundraising drives throughout every school year and monies raised go toward:

  • professional development
  • tuition assistance
  • strategic goals
  • programming
  • pedagogical materials

Successful fundraising allows us to add programming to provide a richer curriculum as well as make a Waldorf education at Four Winds affordable to more families through our Tuition Assistance program. The Annual Fund is out main fundraiser of the year followed by our Scrip program.

  1. Annual Fund Drive – Every Fall each family is requested to make a monetary donation to the Annual Fund. No set amount is mandated, however it is expected that every family contribute at the level they can afford.
  2. Spring Fundraising Drive - Four Winds typically sponsors a Spring fundraiser that requires families to solicit donations or sponsorships, make purchases, or donate their time. Past fundraising events have included raffles, auctions, golf outings, Knit-a-Thons, Jump-a-thons, etc.
  3. Scrip Program – Year round, every family is required to participate in the Scrip Program at Four Winds. The Scrip Program allows families to purchase gift cards or certificates from their preferred grocery, clothing, and department stores, restaurants, and gas stations. Gift cards are equal value to the price paid, meaning that it costs families NOTHING EXTRA to participate. Throughout the school year, cards can be purchased online as well as from Front Office inventory and for added convenience, many cards are reloadable. Families can elect to opt out of Scrip participation with an opt-out fee of $150 per family.

8th Grade Class Trip

On a smaller scale, each class manages its own fundraisers to pay for the 8th grade class trip. This trip is part of the Waldorf curriculum and the destination is determined by the teacher and funds raised.

Social Events

To build community, Four Winds hosts social events throughout the year. Past events have included a spaghetti dinner, a bowling night, and a fall and spring festival. The primary function of these events is to foster social relationships. Attendance is voluntary and costs are set to cover expenses.
